1992 Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, APALA logo. Original proposal

Art Takei, a Nisei progressive and labor activist asked me to come up with a logo for APALA. He and other Asians had demanded such a group for years to no avail. The proposal was rejected because the “wave- fist looked too militant and independent”. The AFL-CIO preferred something closer to the design they already had with white and darker hands shaking in unity

Dozens of older Japanese American women used to work in the shrimp cleaning line at American Fish Co. in Little Tokyo. They were replaced with younger Latinos during the 1980s.
